Karlovice lies in the valley of the Opava River, east of Vrbno pod Pradědem. The municipality has a tradition as a summer resort, has about 960 residents and is around 13 km north of Bruntál.

The Kosárna Museum is housed in a historic log building with a forestry exhibition, managed by the Museum in Bruntál. About 2 km southwest of Karlovice are the remains of 13th-century Freudenštejn Castle, which guarded the route to Vrbno pod Pradědem. The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Karlovice was built between 1777 and 1779.
